About the Cover: Spring/Summer '13
After reading the story of immigration attorney and pro boxing judge Herb Santos BA ’58, JD ’60, Suffolk Magazine staff writer Renee Graham and Art Director Bob Parsons simultaneously thought of the same image: the cover of Aimee Mann’s 2005 album The Forgotten Arm (which would go on to win a Grammy the following year for art direction). Parsons knew the artist, Owen Smith, whose work has appeared in publications such as Sports Illustrated, Time, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and The New Yorker, was famous for his boxing illustrations. Smith used a photo of Santos from 1985, the year Santos judged his biggest fight between “Marvellous” Marvin Hagler and Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns.
